At what temperature does cotton shrink? – How to protect your clothes

Do you sometimes wonder at what temperature cotton shrinks? Cotton is a natural material that is sensitive to heat and easily changes shape. However, with a few simple tricks, you can prevent your favorite garments from becoming too tight or losing length. Below you'll find out how to properly care for, wash, and dry your cotton clothing.

Understand why cotton shrinks

Cotton fibers expand when wet and contract again in high heat. This contraction causes shrinkage. The higher the water temperature or the more intense the heat (for example, in a dryer), the more likely the fibers are to shrink.

  • Chemical finish: Some cotton fabrics are pre-treated and shrink less.

  • Processing: Tightly woven versions can be more resistant to shrinkage than loosely woven fabrics.

  • Moisture absorption: Cotton absorbs a lot of water. In combination with heat, this quickly leads to shrinkage.

Pay attention to the correct temperature

If you want to prevent cotton from shrinking, the washing temperature is crucial. The care label often recommends a temperature between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius. This is usually sufficient to remove dirt while protecting the fibers.

  • Low temperatures: Avoid excessive wear and tear and protect your clothes.

  • Check the label: Here you will find information about the recommended washing cycle.

  • Be careful with blended fabrics: cotton combined with synthetic fibers can be sensitive to excessive heat.

Care for your cotton clothing

Besides washing, proper general care also helps to prevent shrinkage and keep your clothes looking good for a long time.

  1. Sort by color and material
This way you not only avoid discoloration, but also uneven stress on the fibers.

  2. Use a mild detergent.
Aggressive detergents attack the structure of cotton fibers.

  3. Avoid excessive spin cycles.
A gentle spin cycle at low speed protects the fibers from unnecessary stress.

Dry them gently

Although it's tempting to quickly dry your laundry in the dryer, you should be careful. High temperatures in the dryer actually promote shrinkage.

  • Air drying: Hang your cotton items up, preferably in the shade or in a well-ventilated place.

  • Dry flat: Lay delicate garments flat on a towel. This prevents them from becoming distorted by their own weight.

  • Use dryers sparingly: If you do use a dryer, choose a low heat program.

Prevent unpleasant shrinkage

To ensure you enjoy your cotton clothing for a long time, it's worth keeping a few additional points in mind. With each wash and dry, fibers can shrink slightly, so prevention is particularly important.

  • Check the care instructions: If possible, adhere to the maximum temperature indicated on the label.

  • Don't overload clothes: Both the washing machine and dryer should not be too full. This prevents excessive friction and overheating.

  • Regular airing instead of washing: Often, simply airing out clothes briefly is enough to remove odors. This saves energy and protects the fibers.

If you follow these tips, you'll benefit from cotton clothing that stays pleasantly soft and doesn't shrink unnecessarily. Try out which tips work best for you and your wardrobe. This way, you'll be on the safe side with every wash and won't have to wonder at what temperature cotton shrinks.
